Fogoneu is another native grape variety from the Balearic Islands, specifically Mallorca. Often overshadowed by its more famous counterparts, Fogoneu is a lesser-known red grape that adds a unique character to Mallorcan wines. This grape is typically used in blends but has the potential to shine on its own, offering a taste of the island’s distinct terroir.
Fogoneu grapes are thin-skinned and produce light to medium-bodied wines. The grape thrives in Mallorca’s hot, dry climate, and poor soils, which help to concentrate its flavours and aromas. Fogoneu is known for its early ripening and good resistance to drought, making it well-suited to the island’s challenging growing conditions.
Wines made from Fogoneu often exhibit a bright, ruby-red colour. On the nose, they can display a range of aromas, including red berries like strawberries and cherries, along with floral notes and a hint of spice. The palate is typically light and fresh, with soft tannins and moderate acidity, making Fogoneu wines approachable and easy-drinking. These wines can have a slightly rustic charm, adding to their appeal.
Fogoneu is usually blended with other local varieties such as Callet, Manto Negro, and international varieties to enhance the overall complexity and balance of the wine. When used in blends, Fogoneu contributes freshness, fruitiness, and aromatic intensity. Some winemakers are experimenting with single-varietal Fogoneu wines, allowing the grape’s unique qualities to take centre stage.
The light and fruity nature of Fogoneu wines makes them versatile for food pairings. They go particularly well with Mediterranean cuisine, including grilled vegetables, roasted poultry, and seafood dishes. Fogoneu’s bright acidity and soft tannins make it a good match for tomato-based dishes, light pastas, and charcuterie boards.
